On Gun Control, National Security, War.

Recently the Obama administration announced that it has decided to assist the rebels in the Syrian war. This assistance begins with the provision of weapons to the rebels. This is an ironic move on the part of an administration that seeks to restrict American access to high capacity firearms. Would the American government arm its citizens if they were fighting a just war against their own government? Obviously the answer is no. And yet it stands to reason that since the purpose of the Second Amendment was to prevent the government from becoming more powerful than the citizens, that the citizens ought to have access to the same firearms as a general infantry-person. In fact, the Federalist papers speak to the same.

The United States has a very poor track record for arming groups without properly vetting those groups, as can be evidenced by American involvement in Afghanistan when the Russians attacked, or arms-sales to Sadaam Hussein, or Mexican drug cartels. Even if America does keep her troops out of the actual fighting, the arming of a non-U.S. military is a breach of national security, and puts American lives in danger.

Surely, the conditions in Syria are terrible, and the massive loss of life resulting from this Syrian Civil War is staggering. But, much like in Libya and Egypt, arming the unknown rebel is not the right move for America. Instead, the United States needs to stick to international diplomacy here.

Please, write to your elected leaders and tell them that you do not support the arming of Syrian rebels, or American military aid to the same. Instead, encourage them to continue diplomatic endeavors.
