“SMILE”, by Marc Stolfi

“SMILE” – graphite on cotton paper, 11″ x 9.5” (click on image to enlarge)

The age-old religious symbols of the skull, grapes, apple and sphere are used in this drawing inspired by a tribute album to Warren Zevon entitled, “Enjoy Every Sandwich”. It is a sardonic gallows-humor look at mortality. Zevon died in 2003 of lung cancer. There is a tiny self-portrait in the shiny sphere on the bottle, a common theme in much of my Trompe L’oeil style work.
